  • Our iconic and distinctive Wine Train can be chartered by car or by the entire Train. Each of our railcars provide an intimate linear layout that allows even large groups to feel close. From a solo rider or a couple, all the way to an entire charter Train of over 300, we can accommodate anywhere in between.

    Grappa Power Car

    Originally an abandoned boxcar, the newest addition to the Wine Train’s consist was renovated in the Wine Train’s train yard in Napa over an 8 month period and joined the daily runs in June 2013. The Power Car ensures constant power supply for the Train, operating lights, air conditioning, fans, and the kitchen, even when the engines do their turnaround in St. Helena. It is believed to be the only power car in existence that passengers can enter and walk through while in operation. It is aptly named after the strongest alcoholic beverage made from grapes.

    Champagne Vista Dome

    The 1952 Vista Dome car provides our most private dining experience. It is an elevated observation style dining car. Chef Donald Young dazzles guests with an exquisite multiple course meal prepared in the Vista Dome’s own kitchen. Celebrate the warm California sun or silver moonlight and the best views in the Napa Valley over a glass of fine sparkling wine.

    FPA-4 Diesel Locomotives

    #70, 71, and 72

    Our locomotives were built in Montreal Canada at Montreal Locomotive Works, the Canadian equivalent to the American Locomotive Company (ALCO). NVR70 was built in 1958 and 71,72 & 73 were built in 1959. Geared to operate at more than 90 mph, they were originally equipped with steam generators for heating passenger cars. The steam was replaced by our Head End Power (HEP) units that provided electricity for the passenger cars until the addition of our Grappa power car in 20

    Locomotive 73

    Having been acquired in such disrepair that it was inoperable, the Napa Valley Wine Train started a program for the experimental conversion of ALCO Locomotive 73 to 60% natural gas and 40% diesel fuel mixture. In 1999 the conversion became permanent. A total conversion of Locomotive 73 was completed and it was put into service using 100% Compressed Natural Gas on May 14, 2003. Since the full conversion, the clean air locomotive has saved more than 225,000 gallons of diesel. It is the only passenger locomotive to operate on CNG and was one of the first locomotives to conve
