Mobility and Boarding

• Boarding the train requires climbing a set of steep stairs. The tallest step is approximately 9.5 inches, and the steps are slightly recessed.
• Guests who are unable to use stairs may board our 1100 Gourmet Car, which is part of our Main Train and has been specially modified for access using a manual lift operated by our trained staff.
• The path from the ADA parking spaces to our Front Desk is a few hundred feet. There is an additional walk from the Station, across our bridge, to the train platform.
• Because one person often books tickets on behalf of the entire party, we encourage the person making the reservation to check with all members of the group before booking to ensure they are comfortable with the available accommodations.

Onboard Movement

• Our historic railcars have narrow aisles and tight turns, which can make navigating with mobility devices challenging. Moving through the train while it is in motion can also be difficult. We ask guests who use wheelchairs or have balance concerns to move only with appropriate assistance and guidance from our staff.
• If you wish to explore different railcars during your journey, assistance from someone in your party may be required.

Wheelchairs & Seating

• Because we cannot guarantee that personal wheelchairs will fit within our historic railcars, we strongly recommend using our transfer chair, which is designed to navigate the platform lift and the train’s interior.
• The 1100 Gourmet Car is the only train car that can be accessed using our platform lift and transfer chair. Because this is a rail-based experience aboard historic train cars, interior spaces, including dining areas, are limited.
• The Gourmet Car has two tables reserved to accommodate guests with mobility needs, providing enough space on one side of the table for the transfer chair. While we hold these tables for guests who need them, we strongly encourage booking in advance and notifying our Reservations team of your mobility needs so we can reserve the appropriate table for your party.
• The Gourmet Car restrooms are located in the neighboring 1017 Lounge Car. To reach the restroom, guests must pass through the 1100 vestibule, through two doors, and across uneven surfaces to enter the 1017 Lounge Car.
• The 1952 Vista Dome car is accessible only by stairs. After climbing the steps from the platform into the car, guests must climb an additional seven steps, each approximately 8 inches high, to reach the second-floor dining room. A single handrail is located on the right side when ascending these stairs.

Restrooms

• Restrooms onboard the train are not wheelchair accessible. Guests must be able to transfer from a wheelchair or mobility device to use them.

Disembarking Winery Tour Experiences

• Some Wine Train journeys include visits to Napa Valley wineries where guests disembark to explore winery grounds and tasting rooms. Due to the limitations of the historic railcars used for these journeys, off-site locations, and the logistics of safely assisting guests on and off the train at multiple stops, these experiences are not available to guests who rely on mobility devices.
• Guests who are unable to participate in winery-disembarkation experiences can choose from onboard experiences featuring chef-prepared dining, wine, and Napa Valley views from the train.

Yes, The Napa Valley Wine Train accommodates service animals.

While we do not discourage guests with service animals from coming on the train, guests should be aware of the following factors:

1. The motion of the train, and the unnatural, high-pitched metallic sounds that the Train makes as it goes over joints in the tracks may make some animals very uncomfortable.
2. The entire Train is only about 8 feet across, and a walkway runs through it. This means that service animals will always be within about 3 feet of a frequently used walkway. Animals not accustomed to heavy and frequent foot traffic may be very uncomfortable. Service animals must not sit or lay down in a walkway as this presents a hazard to other guests and the animal.
3. Napa Valley Wine Train staff have been trained not to touch the service animal, but other customers may not understand the role of a service animal and may want to touch the service animal.
4. The owner of the service animal must provide all of the care that the service animal requires. Any food or water which the animal requires, and appropriate containers for serving food and water to the animal, should be provided by the owner. Sanitary toilet arrangements must also be made by the owner of the animal, and, in the interest of the health and safety of our guests, the staff of the train will not handle or dispose of animal droppings or urine for the owner.

The Napa Valley Wine Train is owned by Noble House Hotels & Resorts — a collection of luxury hotels and resorts.

Our Wine Train rail line was built in 1864 by California’s first millionaire, Samuel Brannan, to transport visitors to his spa resort of Calistoga. The Napa Valley Wine Train began gourmet dining service September 16, 1989. 

Children are welcome on board most of the Wine Train experiences, and select packages have special rates. The Wine Train is renowned for our November to December Santa Train excursion, having operated now for more than 30 seasons for kids of all ages wishing to be inspired by the family tradition. After checking in at the Wine Train Depot reception desk, feel free to explore the Station.
